Solar for RVers: Quiet Power Basics

Between power checks, our camp humor shirts fit right in at the campground.

Solar will not replace every generator hour for every rig, but a honest starter system can cover lights, fans, routers, and phone charging without waking the loop. Here is a practical framing for RVers shopping their first panels.

Roof, portable, or both

• Roof panels: always there, clean look, need controller space and roof penetrations done right.
• Portable suitcases: aim at the sun, great for shaded sites, easy to start small.
• Hybrid: modest roof array plus a folding panel for winter sun angles.

Match panels to the battery

Panel watts only matter if your charge controller and battery chemistry can accept the current. A 200 W portable on a tired lead-acid bank behaves differently than the same panel feeding LiFePO4. Size wire for voltage drop, use MC4 connectors rated for outdoor use, and keep the controller in a ventilated bay.

Controller basics

PWM is cheaper and fine for small portable kits. MPPT costs more and usually harvests better when panel voltage is much higher than battery voltage, especially in cool bright weather. Set battery type correctly or you will undercharge or overstress the bank.

What solar rarely covers alone

Air conditioning, residential refrigerators on inverter, and long microwave runs still lean on shore power, a generator, or a much larger array plus inverter capacity. Be honest about your loads before you buy.

Care and safety

Wash dust off panels, check mounts after washboard roads, and fuse both the panel and battery sides per the controller manual. Never guess cable gauge on high-current DC.
